Events of 2003

- On the 26th of February Outi Hassi was the guest of the Lipták Szalon, the journalist Horváthy György interviewed the translator about the progress of translating Sorstalanság (Fateless). - The financial support of the Prins Bernhard Fonds (The Netherlands) made possible the upgrade of the computers in the house, since spring the translators are aided by the latest technology. Using the internet and e-mail is free of charge. - On the 21st of June we had our traditional garden party (sponsors: InfoKom Kft. and the Magyar Alkotóművészek Országos Egyesülete), among our guests were many writers, translators and artists. The house hosted an exhibiton of Frigyes Kőnig's paintings, opened by the art historian Anna Bálványos. The Lipták képtár , our standing exhibition consisting of works on loan by Ferenc Banga, Imre Bak, Márton Barabás, Imre Bukta, Mária Chilf, József Darázs, Pál Deim, El Kazovszkij, Miklós Erdély, László Fehér, László Felugossy, Áron Gábor, Bálint Havas, Katalin Káldi, Károly Kelemen, György Kemény, Ilona Keserü, Károly Klimó, András Koncz, Antal Lakner, Viktor Lois, Rezső Móder, László Mulasics, István Nádler, Réka Nemere, István Orosz, Sándor Rácmolnár, Zsuzsa Szenes, Ágnes Szépfalvi, Klára Szilárd, János Szirtes, László Szotyory, Gábor Szörtsey and József Szurcsik, and received additional works by John Bátki, András Böröcz, Mária Chilf, Gábor Roskó, Zoltán Szlabey, Gábor Szörtsey, Villő Turcsány and Mamikon Yengibarian . The event was opened by the town’s major dr. István Bóka. The exhibition was once again organized by the art historian Krisztina Jerger. On the same occasion we launched the second issue of the Füredi Fordítói Füzetek (Füred Literary Translation Leaflets) , containing the prose work Saját halál by Péter Nádas in nineteen languages, the work of twenty translators. We would like to thank the translators for their work. The Dresch Quartett had their traditional concert - with great success. The stew was prepared by Ágnes Karetka and Bernadett Nagy, the bulk of the kitchen-work was done by Judit Tóth. -- On the 24th of June an agreement of cooperation was signed by dr. Márta Schneider , deputy under-secretary of state Ministry Of National Cultural Heritage, Csaba Kuti, president of The Council of Veszprém County, dr. István Bóka major, The City Council of Balatonfüred, and Péter Rácz on the behalf of the Hungarian Translators House Foundation. The goal of the agreement was “to provide the foundation with means guaranteeing optimal working conditions for foreign translators for the process of translating works of Hungarian literature”. - For the first week of June the House hosted a Spanish translation seminar, lead by Judit Xantus with the participation of : L. Gomez Torrego, Yvonne Mester, Agnes Latorre, Éva Cserháti, Eszter Orbán, Kinga Atzél, Anna Győri, Andrea Imrei, Mária Szíjj, Márta Patak, Miguel A. Peláez, Marta García Tarodo, Tünde Tompa, Ágnes Csomós, Ágnes Stieger, M. Gomez-Morán, Ángel Rodriguez, and Mercedes Monmany. The participants read papers, and translated works by Péter Esterházy, Dezső Kosztolányi and Sándor Márai. On the following week we hosted a seminar for French translators, lead by Ágnes Járfás. The participants, Dávid Lengyel, Thomas Chadoeuf-Hoebeke, André Sebes, Oliver Masseglia, Anne-Marie Giudielli and Iris Stollsteiner-Maróczi translated short stories by Iván Mándy. - Sava Babić, Serbian translator, writer and professor, a frequent guest of the House was awarded a honorary citizenship by the City Council of Balatonfüred. - Zsuzsa Fekete , the winner of a translation contest at the Szeged University was awarded a week's stay in the House . László Bratka , the winner of the Book of the Year award, for his translation of V. Plevin's novel, Az agyaggéppuska, also spent a week in the House. - In early September Anamaria Pop Romanian translator taught a class of literature at the Lóczy Lajos secondary school. - On the 6th of September the winners of the S. Quasimodo poetry contest spent a nice morning in the garden of the House reading their poems. - On the 28th of September, the second open-doors day of the House citizens of Balatonfüred were acquainted with our work. - The Jelenkor and Magvető publishing houses donated books to our Library. From the Coppelens Forlag we received several Norwegian reference-works. - In September a loved and esteemed guest of the House Judit Xantus Spanish translator passed away. - During October 5-11 university students were invited to a Croat translation seminar: Helena Molnar, Ivana Delac, Andrej Smit, Jurica Pujkar, Veronika Fagar, Milka Mihaldevic, Marijeta Simjeri, Tamara Bakran, Asja Korbar, Viktorija Santic; the work was led by Franciska Ćurković-Major and Jolán Mann , two teachers of the Hungarology Department of the Zagreb University.

All three translators seminars were sponsored by the Magyar Szak- és Szépirodalmi Szerzők és Kiadók Reprográfiai Egyesülete (MASZRE). - Our caretaker Zsuzsa Bocsor Mrs. Szamosfalvi did a wonderful job throughout the year. - In the course of the year the following media reported about the work of the Translators House: Napló (Veszprém); Füred TV, Balatonfüredi Napló, Magyar Rádió, Radio Jam, Barátság, Élet és Irodalom, Népszabadság, Heti Válasz, Életünk, Magyar Távirati Iroda. -
