Translation programs and seminars in 2018
In all cases, the aim of the translation seminars is to prepare emerging translators, to assist them in their translation paths. In 2018, thirteen translator seminars were held in different languages. A total of about 80 people participated in the programs. We also help towards the first publication of the best fitted translators by inviting a copy-editor or editor of a journal or publishing house from the given country – consequently the emerging translator becomes acquainted with publishing practices and an editor, while the editor meets new translators. We have managed to invite publishing editors to the Bulgarian, Catalan, Polish, Spanish, French and Romanian seminars. The leaders of the seminars are experienced translators, copy-editors, university lecturers. Some of their joint work (translated poems or short prose, perhaps a play excerpt) has already appeared in journals or books (most recently, for example, Adan Kovacsics’s translation: one of the chapters of Krúdy’s The Adventures of Sindbad, which he had translated together with other participants of the Spanish seminar – A hídon – ‘En el puente’).
From 9 January 2018, the Balassi Institute students of literary translation (Jevgeniia Volnova, Hugo Szaz Guimaraes, Kareem Gamaleldin, Lukasz Feliksik, Katarzyna Grzywinska, Zuzanna Rote, Carolyn Haythorn, Wu Yu Feng, Anna Bentley, Martina Pillingová) spent one week preparing the first draft of their final piece and writing their translation diaries.
From 29 January to 4 February 2018, the Russian translators’ seminar led by Oxana Jakimeno was attended by the following: Alina Shcheglova, Volnova Yevgeniia, Ludmila Kulagova, Mariia Scherbatykh. They translated Kornél Laboda: Máté pont indul.

Translation News
Árpád Vickó, the Serbian translator, was awarded the Balassi Prize for Literary Translation 2017, which was presented by the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade on 28 September 2018 in the hall of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. The poet Ottó Tolnai gave a speech.
Publishing Hungary, working within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade and Balassi Institute, supported the translators’ seminars organized by the Translation House. We express our thanks here, too.
The winner of the translation competition for the National Library of Foreign Literature was Réka Havassy in 2018. She won a special prize of the translators’ house: one week in our house in Balatonfüred, which she will enjoy in April 2019. Last year's winner Judit Bódai-Soós spent a week in the house in May 2018.
With the support of the János Arany Memorial Committee, translation of the poet’s works were a special program that began in autumn 2018 and ends in late April 2019. Individuals and groups have been pleased to read poems, and they are expected to produce Golden Translations in about twenty languages.
Events, News
On February 6 2019, Iwasaki Etsuko died. She was a Japanese translator and a much-loved guest at the Translators’ House. She was 75 years old. Important translations: Ferenc Molnár: Pál utcai fiúk, (‘Pál Street Boys’), Imre Kertész: Sorstalanság (‘Fatelessness’), István Örkény: Rózsakiállítás (‘The Flower Show’), György Konrád: A városalapító (‘The City Builder’), Éva Janikovszky: Málnaszörp és szalmaszál. She also translated many Hungarian short stories into Japanese.
The Translators’ House celebrated its 20th anniversary in January 2018. We commemerated this during the 20th jubilee garden party. About fifty large photos of the typical events of the last two decades were hung around the outside of the house. In the Füred Translators’ Pamphlet this time, three authors: Renátó Fehér, Natália Szeifert and József Takáts were translated into 14 languages in total by twenty-three translators. The authors and some translators recited their works. The exhibition artist was Gábor Gerhes. The Mihály Dresch trio provided musical entertainment for the celebration. After the intellectual exertion of a quiz game, the goulash artists (Márta Józsa and Péter Bozsik, as usual) served up their memorable work.
In the summer, we finished the painting of the exterior facade of the building of the house, due to council funding in part. We express our thanks.
On 13 November, Lóczy Lajos Grammar School and 30 graduate students from St. Benedict's High School were introduced to the Translators’ House, as organized by Boglárka Sábitzné Mészáros and Nóra Király of the Arács Culture Centre.
In the second half of the year, we managed to ensure the smooth operation of the Translators’ House. We thank all our supporters for understanding the strategic importance of translating Hungarian literature into other languages.
