Guests of the Translators’ House and the works they translated in 2016:

Besides the welcoming of translators and the one-week translation seminars this was a varied year thanks to a few cultural events. Firstly let’s take a look at the list of translators who applied for residence at the house and what they were translating:

Translation events and seminars in 2016

In 2016 we held twelve translation seminars in different languages, with 87 participants in total. The aim of these classes is to provide professional assistance to the most well-suited emerging translators with regarding their first independent translation work. The seminars are run by experienced translators and university teachers. We provide an opportunity to invite foreign publishers houses and journal editors so as to establish a connection between publisher and translator. Some of the works translated in the seminar have been published in journals and books.

 

Students of the Literary Translation programme at the Balassi Bálint Institute (Alina Shcheglova, Berit Puidet, Elena Kosilowa, Linda Ouma, Liwia Kłosińska, Maya Kalmykova, Magdalena Garbacik, Lukasz Woinski) completed the first drafts of their master translation;

Translation news

 

Ágnes Járfás received the city of Arles translation prize for her translation of Szilárd Borbély’s novel entitled Nincstelenek (‘The Dispossessed’, 2015). Szvetla Kjoszeva received the Bulgarian Association for Literary Translators’ prize for her translation of Edina Szvoren’s Pertu. Pupils studying Spaish at Vetési Albert Grammar School in Veszprém took part in a one-day seminar at the Translators’ House led by Mária Elena Szilágyi (an alumnus of the Balassi Institute literary translation programme) which we reciprocated with a talk at their school.

This year from May 23-26 Balatonfüred was the Hungarian location for the Chinese and Eastern European literary forum, established through a Chinese intitiative. The Translators’ House represented itself in the literary translation section.

The Turkish translator Leyla Önal took part in the exhibition entitled ‘The translation machine’ shown at the Petőfi Literary Museum, using footage recorded on a web camera at the Translators' House.

At the Eight International Congress of Hungarian studies Péter Rácz gave a talk on the literary translation programme (Pécs, 22-27 August). Another of the speakers was an Italian alumnus of the Balassi literary translation programme Claudia Tatasciore.

On the occasion of the Estonian seminars’ ten-year anniversary the Department of Finno-Ugric studies at the University of Tartu and the Hungarian Cultural Centre, Tallin, organised a two-day conference on 22-23 September. Almost every single Estonian translator was present at the cheerful and instructive event. Péter Rácz represented the Translators’ House.

In the National Library of Foreign Literature’s 2016 literary translation competition on 23 September, Ágota Katona received the Translators’ House prize.

 

 

News and events

 

The Balatonfüred Town Library was named after the writer Gábor Lipták, the previous owner of the Translators’ House. – We planted a birch tree and a jasmine bush at the request of one of our sponsors. – Throughout the summer the Translators’ House featured as a stopping point in the Long step town walking tour. Anna Varró was the organiser. Regularly 15-20 holidaymakers enquired about the history of the Translators’ House. ‒ The Garden Party was held on Saturday, 25 Juni: we dedicated the 15th issue of the Füred Translators’ Booklet to Péter Esterházy: we shared 22 translations of his book entitled A szavak csodálatos élete, and the translations in some languages were read aloud for the audience. Márta Kovalovszky opened her series inspired by the works of Reverdy, Borges, Kafka, Bernhard and Weöres entitled Közelítések (‘Approaches’). The second-year music class at the Academy of Drama and Film in Budapest performed an adaptation of Andersen’s The Story of a Mother (Boglárka Nagy-Bakonyi, Bettina Józsa, Júlia Mentes, Flóra Széles, Réka Bori, Roland Fáncsik, Gábor Fekete, Dániel Kurucz), directed by Jakab Tarnóczi. The goulash was prepared by Ágnes Karetka/ Jesze with the help of the Writers’ Shop staff.

In August for the second time Ágnes Nagy-Mihály took on voluntary work in the house. Thank you! ‒ A few overdue jobs around the house were finally tackled with the departure of our guests at the end of November and in December. For years the cellars have had serious damp, therefore we remedied the problem with some water-draining ditches along the north wall. We replaced a broken roof window. And two chimneys had to be repaired in case of any accident. The north façade was on the agenda as well due to damage caused by the weather. The cracked concrete at the entrance has been re-laid with asphalt. ‒

In 2016 we recorded 682mm in total of rainfall with the following distribution: January 63, February 114, March 37, April 9, May 89, June 60, July 130, August 35, September 17, October 66, November 57, December 5mm.

Grants: translators may apply at The Hungarian Translators' House Foundation with project plans of translating Hungarian literature or works in the field of social sciences or philosophy of art. Candidates should submit a project plan with the work to be translated, their CV’s, a list of their publications and, if possible, a publisher’s contract. The scholarship is 140.000 HUF per month. The duration of the scholarship is 2-4-6-8 weeks.
